In astrology, an aspect is another word for angle, referring to the alignments planets make with one another according to the horoscope or astrological chart. Here are the major aspects occurring during March 2021.

There are major and minor aspects in astrology, or angular alignments of the planets, sun, and moon. In this article, we will only focus on the traditional major aspects, also sometimes called Ptolemaic aspects, since they were defined and used by Ptolemy in the 1st Century.

Major aspects are those angles that can be used to divide 360 degrees evenly and are divisible by 10.

QuickStart Guide to major planetary aspects

Here is a quick guide to the standard terms given to the major planetary aspects and their definitions.

What aspects mean

Aspects are typically divided into either hard angles (90° square, 180° opposition) or easy angles (120° trine, 60° sextile). The angle of 0° degrees can fall into either category depending on the two planets involved.

Orb: The degree of difference within an angle from the exactness of an aspect. For example, a trine is specified as 120 degrees. Therefore, if two points were 123 degrees apart, the aspect would be a trine with an orb of 3 degrees.

Conjunction: (Abbreviation: Con) refers to an angle between 0-10 degrees. An orb of approximately 10° is allowed, but if neither the Sun nor Moon is involved, the maximum orb is 8 degrees. This is considered to be the most powerful and mutually intensifying aspect.

Sextile: (Abbreviation: (abrv. SXt or Sex) is an angle of 60 degrees. An orb between 3-4 is allowed depending on the planets involved. It indicates ease of communication between the two elements involved.

Square: (Abbreviation: SQr or Squ) is an angle of 90 degrees. The maximum orb is between 5 and 10 degrees, depending on the planets involved. The outer or superior planet affects the inner or inferior one.

Trine: (Abbreviation: Tri) is an angle of 120 degrees. The maximum orb is between 5 and 10 degrees, depending on the planets involved. Trine is considered a sign of harmony and ease and extremely beneficial.

Opposition: (Abbreviation: Opp) is an angle of 180 degrees. The maximum orb is between 5 and 10 degrees, depending on the planets involved. The second most powerful aspect, and reflective of its name, imparts an oppositional quality.
